June 26, 2019 - Informal Pop-Up Networking Event February 20, 2019 - In Celebration of Black History Month - Black Women Who Lead Northeast Women in Public Finance and Orrick co-hosted an honest and provocative discussion Recognizing Black Women Who Lead in celebration of Black History Month. All too often employees of color do not see themselves reflected in the upper ranks of their companies. Black women in business are challenged by this even more. While companies have recognized that diverse leadership is good for business, today’s challenges for black women with leadership aspirations have yet to be part of a larger dialogue on women, work and ambition. The event was inspired by the Center for Talent Innovation’s (CTI) groundbreaking research “Black Women: Ready to Lead” which focuses on the importance of highlighting and understanding the history, voices and experiences of black women in order to shift the conversations around race, feminism and leadership. The event featured a powerhouse group of speakers from across public finance who took a courageous approach to their personal and professional lives and as a result, have achieved remarkable success. The evening began with a greeting from Lorraine McGowen, Partner and Co-Chair of Orrick’s Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, followed by opening remarks by Neene Jenkins, Vice President at AllianceBernstein. Neene highlighted the CTI research to set the goals for the discussion. Industry leaders Natasha Holiday, Managing Director at RBC Capital Markets; Kimberly Lyons, Senior Vice President at Dexia; and Ritta McLaughlin, Chief Education Office at MSRB, alongside panel moderator Sandra Altine, Managing Director of Global Diversity & Inclusion and Moody’s Investors Service, then shared their insights on everything from the importance of authentic leadership and creating a “circle of sisters” to celebrate your victories and support you through challenges. While a number of topics were touched on throughout the evening, there was overwhelming agreement that the formidable power, talent and organic leadership of black women should be more fully leveraged within Corporate America including public finance. The event closed with remarks by Vanessa Youngs, Assistant Vice President, Manager at Moody’s Investor Service, who shared ways attendees could be stronger allies for women of color. The event transitioned to a networking reception that kept the conversation going! A special thank you to event organizers from NEWPF and Orrick including Neene Jenkins, Kimberly Lyons, Bonnie Tessler, Vanessa Youngs, and Alison Radecki. The response was overwhelming with over 100 guests trekking through the snow to be in attendance. We look forward to keeping the dialogue going! We look forward to seeing you at the next NEWPF event on March 20.
